People that you Meet Online

  • You do not talk to or share with strangers online.

  • If a stranger shares something with you, stop what you are doing and talk to a trusted adult.

  • Check with a trusted adult before talking to your neighbour online.

  • Do not share personal information with your neighbour. 

  • Check with a trusted adult before talking to your friends online.

  • Friends do not pressure you to do things that you do not want to do.

  • Send messages that are nice and honest.

  • Check with a trusted adult before talking to your family online.

  • Remember to always ask What's Up? when sending and receiving messages from family.

  • You are the most important person in your online and offline worlds.

  • You choose what you do online.

  • Talk to a trusted adult if you are unsure about what to do.

People Online

Go through your social circles with a trusted adult to better understand who you should and shouldn't share with on the internet.

You may print your own internet social circles and add pictures of yourself, and your family, friends, and neighbours to help you remember who is and isn't your friend online. 

 

  • ​Self. The Purple Circle is for YOU because you are the most important person in your online and offline worlds.

    • You do not have to talk to anyone online if you do not want to.

    • There are many things to do online that you can do by yourself without talking to anyone else. For example, you can do research for a school project, or watch a funny YouTube video by yourself.

    • It is important that while you are doing these things online, that you are careful and follow the rules of internet safety.

    • Talk to a trusted adult if you are unsure if a website is safe before looking at the website.

    • Do not share any personal information, like your address, name, or phone number.

    • It is also ok to do other things instead of being on the computer. Remember that there are many other fun things to do offline!

 

  • Family. The Blue Circle is for your FAMILY and includes your mom, dad, sister or brother, or other family members that are close to you.

    • Your family includes people that you talk to often offline and feel safe and happy with.

    • Sometimes your family might want to talk to you online, like through Facebook or email for example.

    • It is important to check with a trusted adult first to make sure that the person is the same person online as they say they are offline.

    • Family are people who you may talk to or share fun things you have found online with.

    • Always be nice and honest and talk to your family online the same way that you do offline.

    • Remember that your online and offline worlds are connected by the people that you share with.

 

  • Friends. The Green Circle is for your FRIENDS who you feel very close to. Friends are people that you know from school or who live in your city and who you talk to often offline.

    • Friends are people who you have fun with and who make you feel happy and good about yourself most of the time.

    • Friends are people you can share your thoughts and feelings with and friends are people that are kind to you and care about you.

    • Sometimes your friends might want to talk to or play games with you online, like through Facebook or email for example, but remember that friends do not pressure you to do things that you do not want to do.

    • It is important to check with a trusted adult first to make sure that the person is the same person online as they say they are offline.

    • Always be nice and honest and talk to your friends online the same way that you do offline.

    • Remember that your online and offline worlds are connected by the people that you share with.

 

  • Neighbours. The Yellow Circle is for your NEIGHBOURS and includes people that you see offline in your everyday life.

    • This can include your teacher, your soccer coach, or your friend’s parents.

    • Even if you see these people every day, you may not be friends with them or talk to them often.

    • Make sure that you talk to a trusted adult to make sure that these are people that you can also trust before talking to them online.

    • It is important to check with a trusted adult first to make sure that the person is the same person online as they say they are offline.

    • You may talk to these people online sometimes through email or Facebook.

    • These are people that you can be friendly to, but you do not share personal information with.

    • Always be nice and honest and talk to your neighbours online the same way that you do offline.

    • If your neighbor asks you to do something that you are uncomfortable with, stop talking to them and find a trusted adult.

 

  • Strangers. The Red Circle is for STRANGERS.

    • These are people who you have never met or talked to offline.

    • You do not talk to and share with strangers at all even if they are trying to add you as a friend or share something with you online.

    • If a stranger sends you something online, ignore it and tell a trusted adult right away.

    • Do not open emails or websites sent from strangers because they may contain viruses that can hurt your computer or steal private information from you, or they may contain images that are not safe for you to look at.

    • Do not talk to strangers online.
