The internet is a fun place to play and learn, and with the right tools and know how, you can begin to explore everything the internet has to offer. So let’s get started!

It’s hard to always know what to do online!  Talk with a trusted adult and learn how to use ‘what are you doing online’ to keep safe while on the internet.  Go through each colored section and pick out things you do that are in the blue, green, yellow and red section.  Talk about what color you should be in when playing, learning or chatting on the internet.

What are you doing online?

Who is a Trusted Adult?

A trusted adult is someone who know offline in your everyday life who you feel comfortable talking to and asking questions. A trusted adult is someone that you can go to for help when you are uncomfortable or unsure about what to do in both you online and offline worlds. A trusted adult can be your mom or dad, a teacher, or a neighbour who you really trust.

Talk to a trusted adult if:

  • You accidently see a picture or post online that makes you feel sad, angry, or uncomfortable

  • You receive a message or email online from someone that you do not know

  • Someone you are talking to online says something that makes you feel sad, angry, or uncomfortable

  • Someone asks you to send them a picture of yourself or other people

  • Someone online asks you to share your personal information

  • You have shared or posted something online that you should not have shared

  • You are confused or unsure about what to do

You should also talk to a trusted adult about all the fun things you do online! Talking to a trusted adult about the fun games that you are playing, the videos that you are watching, or the people that you like to talk to online can help your trusted adult understand both your offline and online worlds better. This means that they can help you make choices when you are unsure, and help keep you safe when something happens that makes you sad, angry, or uncomfortable.

Finally, you and a trusted adult can work together to learn about the tools that are available to help you make decisions and use the internet safely. Ask your trusted adult to help you understand how and when to use the tools before going online. Practice using the tools with your trusted adult until you feel like you can use the tools and the internet by yourself. Always remember that you can ask your trusted adult for help whenever you need it.
